Jacksonville's easternmost area is known as "the beaches" and extends 22 miles from north to south encompassing Mayport, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra Beach. Mayport is also home to Naval Station Mayport, a major U.S. Navy base. Each beaches community is positioned along the Atlantic Ocean and features largely residential land. To the west, the beaches are bordered by the Intracoastal Waterway, which runs north-to-south with many waterfront residential properties along its shores. In addition to varied neighborhoods, the beaches offer schools, a hospital, restaurants, nightlife, shopping, oceanfront hotels and plenty of outdoor recreation.
